This course provides students with an introduction to various fields of study and how they are used in a modern medicolegal context. A brief history of the development and professionalization of forensic sciences in the U.S. is also covered. Fields discussed include anthropology, biology, dentistry (odontology), entomology, pathology, psychology, and toxicology.
FSC 3301 - Ethics in Forensic Science (3)
This course explores foundational ethical concepts as they relate to forensic sciences. The course uses applied case-study examples to analyze ethical and moral boundaries of practice Prerequisite: FSC 2201.
FSC 3302 - Forensic Science in Media (3)
This course explores how forensic science and scientists are depicted in popular culture and journalism and how this influences the public’s opinion of the field and its practitioners. Prerequisite: FSC 2201.
FSC 3303 - Death Investigation (3)
This course explores the fundamentals of death investigation as a profession and its role in the medicolegal system. Prerequisite: FSC 2201.
FSC 3304 - Forensic Evidence (3)
This course discusses the theory and practice of evidence protection and collection including biological and medical evidence and controls to be collected, aspects of scenes to be photographed, forensic report writing, rules of evidence and legal considerations of expert witness testimony. Prerequisite: FSC 2201.
FSC 3305 - Criminalistics (3)
This course is an in-depth examination of the role of forensic evidence technicians. Prerequisite: FSC 2201.
